Inspiring Inkhorners : In conversation with Anurag Shourie

Let’s hear from Anurag Shourie, who is an anesthesiologist by profession, poet by heart and author of Half A Shadow – India’s first “Mytho-Medical Thriller”, a book that will keep you glued to its pages with its nail biting suspense till the very end.

You are a doctor by profession. What inspired you to start writing?

Ans. To quote Anton Chekhov-“Medicine is my lawful wife and literature my mistress; when I get tired of one, I spend the night with the other.” My profile on social media explains it all- A poet at heart, a writer by choice and an anesthesiologist by default.

Doctors deal with facts. Then how come your debut book was a Medical thriller?

Ans. My book is a fusion of facts and fiction. If you go through the “references” section at the fag end of the book, you will find a large number of “references” and “links”. In the course of composing this book, I used various internet resources to pull information pertaining to the mythological events incorporated by me in my manuscript. I have tried to venture into the realm of Medical Fiction which has not been fully tapped in the sphere of Indian Literature. In order to lend a semblance of credibility to the flights of fantasy that this work of Fiction entails, a lot of Medical references were used.

Tell us something about your debut book – Half a shadow?

“Half A Shadow” is India’s first Medical Thriller. In fact, I have coined the term-“Mytho-medical” thriller for the genre that my book belongs to because there is a dash of Mythology in this cocktail. “Half A Shadow” is a haunting saga of unbridled lust, unrequited love, unprecedented mayhem and unfinished lives.

How was the publishing process?

It took me five years to write my first book and another two to get it published. The established publication houses apparently did not find my story appealing enough to invest their resources in it and I was averse to the idea of vanity publishing. (As my favorite author Ruskin Bond says-“One should never pay to get published.”)

It was at this critical juncture that Inkhorn came to my rescue akin to a knight in shining armor and in a few months’ time, my dream culminated in reality. “Half A Shadow” is a “complete” book, thanks to Inkhorn.

What compels you to write and how do you take out time from your busy schedule for writing?

There are many stories, the seeds of which have been incubating in the womb of my tumultuous mind over the years and now they are striving to take birth. It becomes my moral duty to ensure that they see the light of the day. I can’t rest in peace until I have done justice to each story by ensuring that it reaches the right audience in the best possible form; sounds “clichéd” but this is the truth.

I yearn for the day when I would be sitting at my desk and writing stories for a living. A very lucky few in this world get to make their passion, their source of livelihood. Though it may seem to be a bit late in the day, I still nurture this dream.

Any advice for aspiring writers, you want to share?
